Last breath

We carefully step forward quiet as we can
Unaware we are heading to our final grave
A gust of air flows with a brief warning
The winds speak danger to our attentive ears

Breathing becomes a collective union of trust
The silence echo's to our cautious toes
Scenery reaches out in front of our existence
No person or a tumble-weed can be seen

The skies light-up instantly with fleeing birds
Just enough time for us to find protected cover
Volcano eruption of heavy gunfire surrounds us
Pinned down with no exit in sight for anyone

Desperation retaliation fire to assist our retreat
Met with a final bullet to my brothers and sisters
Their bodies lying near my doomed human skin
My training tries to find a way to save my family

Taken a last defiant step of drawing my weapon
Quickly blocked with a final bullet ripping me apart
Falling to the ground with the undeniable knowledge
The swan song to my destiny has been reached

My thoughts drift upon the family left at home
Knowing their sight will never lay upon me again
A tear escapes my eyes, unlike my unit could
Last breath is taken as my soul escapes to heaven
